$14M home damaged after attic fire
A fire over the weekend near San Francisco, California, caused significant damage to a high-priced property.
Local officials told Bay City News Service that a fire at the Atherton house likely started in the attic over one of the home's wings. The multimillion-dollar Japanese-style property has more than 11,000 square feet of living space over two floors.
The news source reported that while the owners were not home, a worker called for assistance after the alarm went off. It's unknown what kind of homeowners insurance coverage the property owners had, but local officials said that the structural damage - early estimates say it will cost roughly $100,000 to repair - could have been significantly worse.
"We're very fortunate," Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman told the source. "With this type of home you can have rapid spread of the fire because of the wood shingle roof and the ornamental wood features for the Japanese style."
Data from Zillow.com shows the home was sold in 2007 for $14 million. However, the website estimates its current value is likely closer to $6.2 million.
