Alaska issues disaster declaration following November storm
In the wake of the severe wind storms which hit Alaska's Central Kenai Peninsula last month, state officials are issuing an official disaster declaration to speed relief to local residents.
Many residents were forced to file homeowners insurance claims as high winds and rising water levels caused property damage and knocked out electricity to thousands of homes and businesses. The state is also seeking federal aid to deal with the disaster.
"The absence of power in the middle of winter can have a series of negative effects that cascade throughout a community," Governor Parnell said. "Now that the power is restored, discussions include potential mitigation efforts to prevent future disruptions of the power distribution system."
The Associated Press reports an early estimate found damages from the storm were likely higher than $1.8 million.
Earlier this month, Parnell also issued another emergency declaration to deal with the damage left by the West Coast Storm which occurred on November 7. That storm hit more than three dozen communities across the state with hurricane-force wind gusts.
