Arizona fire torching through national forest area

Officials in Arizona say wildfires in Arizona have blazed through thousands of acres of national forest land over the past month.

One blaze in eastern Arizona - known as the Wallow Fire - has destroyed 40,000 acres near the Apache and Sitgreaves national forests, reports the Durango Herald. Hundreds of firefighters have been fighting the blaze while an unknown number of homeowners have been evacuated. It's not yet clear the extent of loss the fires could result in from homeowners insurance claims.

Another wildfire, called Horseshoe Two, has burned up roughly 70,000 acres in southeastern Arizona, where the state's border meets Mexico. In a twist, the New York Times reports the fire has actually stoked the already sensitive topic of border control among residents, with some locals even accusing illegal immigrants of causing the fire. Fire officials told the Times evidence suggests Horseshoe Two was the result of arson, but refused to link it to illegal immigrants or anyone in particular.

The Associated Press noted Horseshoe Two remains 75 percent contained, and said some firefighting efforts may be reallocated to other blazes.
