California couple to start rebuilding after locating insurance policy
A Sacramento, California, couple is thankful for their homeowners insurance policy after a fire destroyed their home Saturday night.
Sally Finch and her husband, who had just recently married, thought they had pushed a frying pan with bacon off of the heat as they left their home to pick up a turkey for the next day. When they returned, smoke had filled the house.
"We were rushing to get the turkey before they closed, but when we got back I could smell the bacon, and I thought oh the bacon is burned. I opened up the door and there was so much smoke," Sally Finch told KCRA-TV.
The home suffered extensive damage, although firefighters were able to save some of their Christmas presents with a fireproof blanket.
The couple was initially worried that their California homeowners insurance policy wasn't valid, KTXL-TV reported, but a neighbor was able to piece together their information and show that they were covered.
Fires remain more common during the winter than any other time of year. The National Fire Protection Association says cooking is the most frequent cause of home fires, and that kitchens were the source of more than a third of fires last year.
