California officials warn about winter storms
With the threat of severe winter storms looming, insurance officials in California are urging residents to purchase flood insurance.
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said that the heavy rains that often occur during the early part of the year can cause severe flooding and mudslides in some parts of the state.
Damage from mudslides and flooding is not covered by standard homeowners insurance policies. Homeowners must purchase separate flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program to be covered from those hazards.
"Flooding can occur anywhere," said Jones. "I strongly encourage all homeowners to document their possessions before any type of disaster strikes. It's stressful enough to lose your belongings when severe weather hits."
Jones added that according to data from the NFIP, just 2.5 percent of California residents and business owners have flood coverage in place.
The continued operation of the flood insurance program remains uncertain. While the Senate recently passed a six-month extension for the NFIP, the House has not yet followed suit. It's set to expire December 16.
