Couple fends off bear attack
A Pennsylvania couple sustained some injuries but they are safe after fighting off a bear that entered their home on the morning of October 4.
Rich and Angie Moyer, homeowners who live in Newport, Pennsylvania, were getting ready for work in the upstairs portion of their home when they heard a loud commotion coming from below. When they went downstairs to investigate, they found a large black bear had entered their residence.
"[The bear] knocked me down," Angie Moyer told NBC's "Today" show. "I was down on the ground wrestling with it in front of the door."
She added that when her husband tried to knock the bear off of her, it turned its attention to Rich.
"I kept my head down the whole time, so the bear wouldn’t rip my face up," he told the network news source. "It literally ripped the back of my head instead … [I was] feeling the hair pull. I thought it was the end."
The Moyers were able to fend off the bear but it left Rich with numerous scratches and puncture wounds.
While no significant damage was done to the house, they were left with significant medical bills. While homeowners insurance may provide for medical expenses resulting from injuries at home, The Associated Press reports that does not include bear attacks.
