Georgia homeowners insurance rates are likely to be affected by the doubling of the amount of fire stations in Pooler, according to the Savannah Morning News.

In early 2010, homeowners insurance rates spiked for Pooler residents, the paper states, after the Insurance Services Office increased the city's fire-risk rating from 4 to 6. After this move, Pooler fire chief Wade Simmons told city council members recently homeowners insurance rates rose between 10 and 55 percent citywide,

However, the city announced it plans to use an $850,000 loan from the Georgia Municipal Association to fund construction of two new fire stations, which is expected to lower insurance rates for homeowners.

The plans to build new stations in Pooler have "been a long time coming," Mayor Mike Lamb told the newspaper, adding that he is glad the project is coming to fruition.

Simmons added the city's fire-risk rating may even dip below 4 once the stations are functional.

In addition to rates in Georgia rising, many Florida residents may experience a hike in homeowners insurance rates, as the ISO recently announced an increase in the fire-risk rating for many rural communities throughout the state.
