Home of paralyzed woman in Michigan robbed, vandalized
Officials in Michigan continue to investigate after the home of a quadriplegic woman in Michigan was robbed after she went to the hospital.
Police say that the burglars broke into the home sometime over the weekend, taking electronic equipment, collectibles and Christmas presents left in the home, while also vandalizing the inside. Care workers discovered the crime when preparing for her to return home from the hospital.
Officials said they believe the home was targeted because of the owner's condition. While the woman's home insurance policy should pay for most of the items damaged, her family said that the crime is disturbing.
"They took a couple DVD players, Blu Ray players, TVs," Kevin Kotrba, the victim's son, told WWMT-TV. "Vandalism, there's things all over the wall, they took stuff out of the refrigerator and dumped it. It's ridiculous and wrong."
Care workers also told the station that the owner isn't sure if she feels safe going back home again.
Homeowners may want to install burglar alarms or other protection devices to prevent similar incidents. Most home insurance companies offer significant discounts for homes that have strong deadbolts or alarm systems.
