Indiana police on alert for Halloween vandalism
Police in Evansville, Indiana, say they are taking steps to reduce the number of vandalism incidents which regularly occur around the Halloween holiday.
Officials told the Evansville Courier & Press that the area has averaged nearly a dozen reports of mischief each year on November 1. While most of the complaints are for minor acts, they also include burglary and theft and more major situations leading to homeowners insurance issues.
In addition, police told the Courier & Press that many incidents likely aren't reported, so the actual number of vandalism incidents could be much higher.
"Officers on the earlier shift make sure the kids are out of the roadways," police spokeswoman Karen Kajmowicz told the paper. "But then as the night goes on, the mischief level rises and it's more so responding to those who have been out celebrating Halloween a little more than they should."
The threat of vandalism has also caused many other municipalities to make precautionary plans. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City has already said it will stop bus service in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx if vandals begin taking aim at drivers.
