Two weeks after President Barack Obama issued a federal disaster declaration for Massachusetts in the wake of Hurricane Irene, approximately $1.3 million in emergency funding has been approved for Bay State residents, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Of the $1.3 million, $1,295,340 will go toward individuals' expenses such as rent for temporary housing, repairs for damage done to residents' properties not covered by homeowners insurance and rebuilding destroyed structures, FEMA indicates.

The relief organization said the remaining $93,885 will go toward disaster-related medical and dental costs, as well as clothing and household items for residents who've lost many of their belongings.

FEMA-contracted inspectors visit homeowners to dispense the relief assistance, but FEMA is warning individuals to beware of fraud, as scam artists may try to take advantage of homeowners by posing as an employee. FEMA says residents should never reveal their personal information to anyone that doesn't establish proof they work for the agency.
