Nevada officials say Caughlin fire claims top $16M
Officials say homeowners insurance companies in Nevada have reported hundreds of insurance claims resulting from the recent Caughlin Ranch Fire.
The Nevada Division of Insurance says it has received more than 600 claims worth more than $16 million as a result of the blaze. Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper said that the incident should serve as a reminder to Nevadans that they should review their homeowners insurance policies for any new developments as the new year approaches.
"The Caughlin Ranch Fire is a reminder to us all to call our insurance agent or company and ask for an annual policy review," Kipper said. "This will ensure appropriate and adequate coverage is in place to protect our assets."
Kipper also reminded residents that damage to cars isn't covered under home insurance - even if the car is in a garage - and would instead fall under the comprehensive portion of a driver's auto insurance.
The large wildfire led Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to declare a state of emergency. In total, it destroyed more than 30 homes and charred more than 2,000 acres of land. The fire was driven quickly by strong winds, with officials saying they were lucky more homes were not destroyed.
