Officials contain disastrous Nevada wildfire
Emergency personnel announced Sunday evening that the wildfire which had swept across parts of Nevada over the past few days was fully contained.
The fire will eventually lead to dozens of homeowners insurance claims, as the flames severely damaged more than 30 homes and scorched nearly 2,000 acres of land near Reno. Experts said the unusual and out-of-season wildfire may have been caused by power lines in the area, although they have not officially determined a reason for the blaze.
More than 10,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the path of the fire last week, which was being quickly pushed by winds of up to 30 miles per hour. One person died during the evacuation and many others received treatment for various conditions.
Officials told residents with property damage to "use extreme caution" when trying to take personal property from their homes in order to prevent any further injury. They added approaching snowfall may continue to weaken damaged structures.
Wildfires are a significant source of property insurance claims each year. AIR Worldwide says that they have resulted in losses of $10 billion over the past 25 years.
