Officials say a possible tornado may have touched down in Georgia and caused widespread property damage across parts of the state.

Local news reports said thousands of people were left in the dark as high winds pulled down trees and power lines. Most of those outages were near the city of Rome. Officials said multiple homeowners insurance claims were likely, as many homes sustained damage from falling tree limbs. Many businesses also lost windows to the storm.

More than a dozen people were also treated for injuries, and a few were taken to local hospitals. WSB-TV reported one home was blown off of its foundation and leveled. The worst damage appeared to be concentrated in Floyd and Gordon counties, according to the station.

A team from the National Weather Service was heading to the area to determine if some of the damage was officially caused by a tornado.

"We've received reports that we had some major structural damage reported in southern Gordon County with at least one home destroyed and several damaged," NWS meteorologist Robert Garcia told The Associated Press.
