Mother Nature unleashed its fury on thousands of Western residents recently, as a destructive hailstorm pelted parts of Wyoming and Colorado, leading to thousands of homeowners insurance claim filings.

According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, approximately 12,600 homeowners claims were filed in Wyoming and nearly 13,000 were filed in Wyoming. Including autos, claim filings combined totaled 50,000 and the damage is estimated to be in excess of $164 million.

Carole Walker, executive director of the RMIIA, said wild weather can strike at any moment and homeowners need to prepare themselves.

"Mother Nature reminded us last week that severe weather season is still in full swing in the Rocky Mountain Region," said Walker. "It's important for all of us to be talking to our insurance representatives to make sure we are protected and have the coverage we need - especially during these peak months for catastrophic weather."

This past year has been one of the insurance industry's costliest, as throughout the country, homeowners and residents have been battered by wild weather, including tornadoes, floods and wildfires. Hurricane season began in June. What could be the year's first significant hurricane is currently forming in the Pacific.
